The Netherlands revisited in 2025
since the visit to Amsterdam in 2012

As in 2012, we landed at Schipol Airport, but now we took bus no. 470 south to the town of Alphen aan den Rijn, which is located in a bend of the Oude Rijn, one of the many remnants of the mighty Rhine River.
Alphen aan den Rijn, our Starting point for trips around Zuid-Holland.

"South Holland (Dutch: Zuid-Holland) is a province of the Netherlands with a population of over 3.8 million as of January 2023 and a population density that is  one of the world's most densely populated areas."

- The Netherlands has many canals, With canals come bridges and bascule bridges. With bascule bridges come waiting and then a poem is good to read and think about.
Here are Kimm Mulder's words on a canal bascule in Alphen aan den Rijn

"Situated on the North Sea in the west of the Netherlands, South Holland covers an area of 3,308 km2, of which 609 km2 is water. It borders North Holland to the north, Utrecht and Gelderland to the east, and North Brabant and Zeeland to the south."

Gouda [ˈɣʌudaː] is more than "just" Cheese, but..

Gouda has a population of 75,000 and is famous for its Gouda cheese, stroopwafels, many grachten, smoking pipes, and its 15th-century city hall.

Gouda is known for its Gouda cheese, which is still traded on its cheese market, held each Thursday. Gouda is also known for the fabrication of candles, smoking pipes, and stroopwafels. Gouda used to have a considerable linen industry and several beer breweries.

Gouda cheese is not made in the city itself, but rather in the surrounding region. It derives its name from being traded in Gouda where the city council imposes stringent quality controls.

- The city of Gouda offers more space for boats than for cars. We must adapt to that.

- The white carnation is the national symbol of recognition and appreciation for the Dutch veterans

- From orphanage to Michelin restaurant, Restaurant LIZZ* can be experienced in the old town of Gouda

And then den Haag (the Hague)

"The provincial capital is the Dutch seat of government The Hague, while its largest city is Rotterdam. The Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta drains through South Holland into the North Sea. Europe's busiest seaport, the Port of Rotterdam, is located in South Holland. (Source: Wikipedia)

If you drive straight through the busy center of The Hague you will come to Scheveningen which has a kilometer of beach facing the sea. Just get past all the hotels .

In fact this beach is a small but very popular part of The Hague's 11 km of beach .

And of course, along the beach there is a main street with countless restaurants offering food and drinks.
This is den Haag the Netherlands and not Miami, Florida.

As you can se the central part of the Scheveningen's  boulevard, is beeing  be renovated. And the renovation is planned to will take place until the summer of 2025. Picture is taken late june 2025.

The Pier is the most famous icon on the Dutch coast. Old-fashioned enjoy the great sea views and old-fashioned 'pierewaaien'. The attraction offers a wide range of street food, restaurants, bars, terraces, indoor shops and exclusive hotel suites with panoramic views of the North Sea. They offer an unique experience in the spectacular attractions such as the Ferris wheel, Bungy Jump Holland and the Zipline.

We didn't try any of these.
..

Instead we walked along to visit the birds at
Avifauna Bird Park in Alphen aan den Rijn.
