The birds at Avifauna Bird Park in Alphen aan den Rijn

"Avifauna Bird Park" has a special predilection for birds. There are more than 220 different bird species and a 15-tal mammals and reptiles in the park. That means a whole lot of colorful birds from all over the world, mixed with red pandas, lemurs and mares. And some nice educational displays of bird feeding.
An exciting encounter with a huge ostrich once you enter the park

The ostrich is with its maximum length of 2,75 meter the largest bird in the world! She have a long neck andvery long legs. But a very small head!

"Avifauna Bird Park opened on 17 May 1950, and was the first dedicated bird park in the world. The park has a lot of greenery and ponds, and also a restaurant and a children's playground."

And four-legged animals from distant lands.

- Even an animal from more distant regions may find it warm in the Netherlands. This one originally comes from South America

A female "bird keeper" narrated and fed flocks of various small birds that came flying in in front of a crowded atrium

Colorful parrots with its characteristic two toes pointing forward and two toes pointing backward settled in the trees nearby

...while various other long-beaked birds ate the food that was placed on the ground

The red flamingo is also called the Caribbean flamingo or Cuban flamingo

The double hornbill owes its name to the striking horn-like deformity of its large yellow beak. This beak allows it to call loudly and it uses it to regulate its temperature. With a wingspan of 150 cm, the double hornbill is the largest hornbill in existence.

At the end of the bird demonstration, you can make a donation to the cockatoo. The cockatoo will place the money in a donation kiosk

When feeding the Humboldt penguins, zookeepers have to clear away the seagulls. This penguin species is a medium-sized penguin that lives along the coastal areas of Chile and Peru. The seagulls are Dutch.

The meerkat is a small carnivorous mammal in the mongoose family found in southern Africa, primarily in Botswana, Namibia, southwestern Angola, and South Africa. It is social and is known for its sentinels, animals that occupy a high position to stand guard on behalf of the herd. Like here.

Alphen aan den Rijn
is a municipality and city in the Netherlands in the province of South Holland with about 115,000 inhabitants. It is located between the cities of Leiden and Utrecht on the Oude Rijn (Old Rhine) river, where the Gouwe river branches off.

The city is located in what is called the "green heart" of the Netherlands, which is a somewhat less populated area in the Randstad metropolitan area.

The name Alphen probably comes from the old Roman fortress Albanianae, which means "settlement by the white water"

Here is a picture of Holland as it is remembered:
Fine buildings, green trees, canals, bridges and bicycles! And nice people..
.

Good bye for now, but be sure: We'll be back!
