A must being in this region, is a visit to Sagres
and Cabo do San Vicente. In Sagres, the large fortress
dominates the scenery. It was excavated in the 18th century,
and was built for Prins Henry, the sea-explorer and navigator
in the 15th century.

South West Going
further west, the road leads to Sagres. It is as
far south and west you get in Europe. The town
itself does not offer much. Except perhaps from
the Poussada, situated on the cliff-face, facing
the sea. The Fortaleza on the cape south of
town, is what is dominating the view. Spectaclular
huge white walls streches all across the cape.
Henry the Navigator had this built, and had his
school of navigation here. It is said to have been
the 15th century's equivalent to the Cape
Canaveral of today.
Leaving the Cape, you should make a stop at the
Fortaleza do Beliche. It's old walls on the
cliff-face, does not seem so impressive, but the
inside reveals a green garden and a nice, quiet
restaurant with a breathtaking view. It also
holds a Poussada where you can spend the night.
(14000 esc pr. person) Nice for honeymooners or
people looking for a special quiet experience.
